Is there an American character

Description:
A Michigan State University faculty panel discusses the question, "Is There an American Character?" Panelists look at the concept of a unique American identity, temperament and perspective that. Several argue that the stereotypical definition of the American Character presents the view of one dominate group and largely ignores the view point of other races. Others suggest that an American character may be described as embodying a stubborn resistance to being governed by others, while creating institutions and structures for self governance and the promotion of a civic life. Dr. Jackson-Elmoore convenes the session and moderates questions from the audience. Part of the series "Sharper Focus/Wider Lens" sponsored by the following MSU departments and colleges: the Honors College, Lyman Briggs College, James Madison College, the Residential College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Social Science, the Department of English, the Department of History, the Department of Political Science, the Department of Sociology, Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures, and Chicano/Latino Studies.
