Dr. Howard E. Wolpe, Africa Project Director at the Smithsonian's Woodrow Wilson International Center and former U.S. Congressman from Michigan, discusses his involvement in efforts for social justice in South Africa, both as an academic and a politician. Wolpe is interviewed by Dr. David Wiley, Director of the MSU African Studies Center. Wolpe describes how he became interested in Africa as a graduate student at Boston University and coming to Western Michigan University in 1967 to teach African studies. He also talks about his rise in politics and his involvement, as a Michigan legislator and U.S. Representative, in African issues at a time of significant change on the continent. He discusses his anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa and at Michigan State University and his more recent experiences as part of the Clinton administration and his work at Smithsonian.
