- Description:
- This paper discusses the nature, context and evolution of social policy training in the South African context. It addresses the definition and scope of social policy, social policy and social work practice in South Africa and deals with social policy content in social work curricula in schools/departments in South African universities. The unique experiences of these departments/schools mirror the wider complexities of South African society, which is undergoing deep-seated changes and transformation in all spheres of life. The major antecedent to such change and transformation was the first democratic elections of 1994 that saw the demise of the former political system of apartheid.

- Description:
- This paper presents the results of a study on the participation of women and of sexual equality in participation in four producer co-operatives in Zimbabwe, and contextualises the results in terms of women in other socialist countries and the current Zimbabwean government policy on women and co-operatives. Particular areas which are seen as obstacles to the participation of women are identified and recommendations made which may address these obstacles and lead to the increasing participation of women in the future.

- Description:
- This paper argues that the self help or mutual aid association is an ideal partner for small scale development agencies. Indeed this African institution is the quintessential Non Government Organisation (NGO). It is embedded in the social fabric of the every day life of the poor. The self help voluntary association is the ordinary African's own response to the stresses and difficulties they face, part and parcel of their repertoire of coping mechanisms and adaptive strategies. This paper discusses the selfhelp voluntary association in the context of the Ethiopian situation, but this institution exists throughout the continent and much of what is discussed applies equally to self help associations that exist outside Ethiopia. The paper begins with a brief review of the literature concerning self help voluntary associations and then goes on to describe the evolution, adaptation, function androleofthis institution inEthiopia. In the second partof the paper some suggestions are made about the potential of the institution as a developmental agent or partner. Both International and Indigenous NGOs have, unfortunately, been unwilling or unable to find ways in which to model themselves on, or find mechanisms to assist, self help voluntary associations.

- Description:
- This article considers some of the factors involved in the modification of social work education and practice to suit the setting of a society in transition. The author describes a research project undertaken with students at the Hong Kong School of Social Work, with the purpose of designing a relevant skills training course suited to their actual work needs and requirements. The result indicates that student social workers are likely to opt for an eclectic model, constructed principally from Western theory, but drawing from the concrete reality of their own situations. The demands of time annd pragmatic considerations, as well as conservative attitudes, are likely to mean that uniquely 'indigenous' models are not developed. However the outcome most probably will be a workable amalgam of learned theory adjusted to suit practical realities encountered in the field.

- Description:
- Poverty in Nigeria, like in most developing nations of Africa, is widespread and seems to be on the increase by the day. When poverty is coupled with high levels of economic and social aspirations, the stage is set for criminal activities - particularly official corruption, robbery and dealing in illegal goods and services. People who are thwarted in attaining desired social and economic goals legally, may seek to obtain them illegally. This paper, using anomie theory, analysis how poverty, resulting from unemployment and inflation, increases criminal activities in Nigeria. The discussion stresses that poverty is a social problem that deserves serious attention. It noted that the social problems which afflict Nigerians as a people are the result of the faulty strategy of development which has prevailed in the country, the particular set of economic and social policies to which that strategy has given rise and the particular structural arrangements which have produced and sustained both the strategy and the policies. It recommends a drastic modification of the development strategy, both at the macro and micro levels.
