The detectives pose on the stairway outside of the Police Headquarters on Bates Street and Farmer Street. The majority are dressed in coats, ties, and boater hats. A smaller group of similarly dressed men are visibly leaning on an iron railing at the upper right. Photo is mounted on heavy cardstock.

His uniform includes a buttoned coat, badge, and a cap decorated with the number "3" surrounded by a laurel motif. He has a short goatee. Image is mounted on beige cardstock and includes a loose oval-shaped off-white paper frame with gold trim. "9/13/66 Thursa Walker, 4860 Delba Dr. Dayton, Ohio, 349-7199" handwritten on verso in pencil "William James Appling (Det.) in police uniform of early 1870s grandfather of donor, Mrs. Edgar Stevens, 625 Merchant Ave. Ypsilanti 48197, Xed 4-10-68" handwritten on verso in ink.
