- Marian Anderson at local radio station W.G.R.D. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Marian Anderson was a famous singer and was the first African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1939, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd estimated at 75,000. She was also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
