- Former steelworker and labor leader Tom Turner talks about his childhood and education in River Rouge and Ecorse, Mi and his involvement in organized labor and the civil rights movement. Turner also talks about discrimination and segregation in Detroit and in the workplace, his time as president of the Detroit NAACP and president of the Wayne County AFL-CIO, and the many labor leaders who inspired him. Turner says that black trade union leaders constantly and successfully pressured employers and organized labor to widen access for minorities to skilled trades and better paying jobs.

- Saginaw Valley State University historian Jennifer Stinson reads from her paper, "The work of race: African-American and African-Indian farmers, farm laborers, and indentured servants in the Upper Midwest". Stinson describes the relationship between race and the types of work done by minorities in the Midwest. She uses the stories of several mixed race settlers in rural Wisconsin to illustrate experiences common to persons of color. Question and answer session follows. Stinson is introduced by Professor John P. Beck, Associate Director, Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. - Stanford University history professor Estelle Freedmen delivers a talk entitled "Redefining rape : sexual violence in the era of suffrage and segregation." Freedman explores the efforts of both women's rights and racial justice advocates who have tried to change legal and cultural constructions of sexual violence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her talk revolves around the following three points: the historically fluid concept of rape, rape's relationship to citizenship, and the particular historical context in which legal changes have occurred as well as their limits.

- Dr. David Hamilton Golland, professor of history at Governors State University in Illinois, delivers a talk entitled, "Building affirmative action from the ground up : the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the construction industry." Golland discusses segregation and conflict, protests against segregation in the building trade unions, and how some employers and their unions adapted to integration while others resisted. He explains the small inroads made by African-Americans prior to passage of the Civil Rights Act and how the Act made integrated unions possible. Gollard describes the creation of the Cleveland Plan and the Philadelphia Plan, and Federal officials actively fighting affirmative action plans. Gollard answers questions from the audience. Golland is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck.
