- Aelfric's homily for Pentecost (In Die Sancto Pentecosten) in the First Series of Catholic Homilies describes the origin of the Jewish feast for which the apostles had gathered when they received the Holy Spirit in the form of tongues of fire. The homily is then largely given over to the events commemorated on the day and issues related to the establishment of the Church.
