- Oral history interview with Jean Friedel and Margie Miner, conducted by Thomas Coyne on March 21, 1995. Friedel and Miner discuss how they came to teach at WMU, the status of women’s physical education programs, the development of women’s physical education programs, the organizational structure of women’s sports, discrimination in sports, and the role of Title IX in women’s athletics. Jean Friedel coached seven women’s sports, including basketball, field hockey, volleyball, gymnastics and track and field, at WMU during her 29-year tenure, which ran from 1960-1989. Margie J. Miner was a faculty member from 1957 until her retirement in 1986. She began the Women's Recreation Association at the university. - Ralph Willis, head of WMU Maintenance Department, receiving a special citation for 25 years of service to the University from President Miller during the Summer Session commencement on July 24, 1964. Ralph Willis served as the supervisor of custodians since 1947. He was responsible for the physical arrangements for Western's commencement programs for 17 years. In the background sit faculty in academic regalia. The photo appeared in the September 1964 WMU Newsletter.
