- Certificate appointing Edward Edgar Hartwick Captain of Company B, First Independent Battalion, Michigan National Guard, issued on April 5, 1901. The text of the certificate is as follows: "State of Michigan Military Department Aaron T. Bliss Governor and Commander in Chief To all who shall see these Presents, Greeting: Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Valor, Ability and Fidelity of Edward E. Hartwick In the Name and by the Authority of the People of the State of Michigan, I do hereby appoint him Captain Company B, First Independent Battalion Michigan National Guard to rank as such from the Twentieth day of February 1901. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duties of such Office by doing and performing all things thereunto belonging AND I DO STRICTLY CHARGE AND REQUIRE all Officers and Soldiers under his command to be obedient to his orders. And he is to observe and follow such orders and directions from time to time as he shall receive from the COMMANDER IN CHIEF, the General or other Superior Officers, set over him according to the rules and discipline governing the Michigan National Guard. This Commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the Governor of the State of Michigan. In Testimony Whereof, I have caused these Patent and the Great Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed.
