- Print. Mounted, sepia-toned photographic print of an event, likely a memorial for Ulysses S. Grant, following his death in 1885, held in Campus Martius around the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. The photo was taken from an elevated position facing southeast. The monument is decorated with banners and flags, and cloths bearing a large letter G which are fastened around the pedestals beneath the eagles. Several people are seated on a stage in front of the monument. A uniformed marching band and a row of uniformed men on horseback are also within a square around the monument circumscribed by a line of men in parade uniforms and helmets. A large crowd spreads outward which consists of well-dressed men (many in boater hats), women, and a few horse carriages. The balconies and windows of the Central Market Building, in the upper left portion of the frame are also packed with spectators, as are the windows of the neighboring building across Cadillac Square at the upper right.

Photo was taken at street level through a crowd gathered in Campus Martius facing northeast. The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the Second Williams Block of the Monroe Block, and the Central Market Building are visible through the sea of hats, umbrellas, and flags. Banners have been draped from the Central Market Building. "In front City Hall, (in square) Detroit Mich, during G.A.R. meeting there (about 1889.) City crowded. Citizens took in hundreds of visitors. Soldiers Monument in background. Old Russel House, famous hotel, to right of Soldiers Monument. Papa (Geo. Atwater) & his mother & Anne Marthington & others stopped there when on for our wedding in Nov. 19, 1901." handwritten on verso.

Before it stands the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, missing the eagle statues on its lowest pedestals. To the left of the Central Market building is McLennan and Company Dry Goods. On the opposite side is the Russell House, which also houses M. Horowitz and Company Crockery, and the Russell House Bazaar. A business advertising "wholesale liquors," is visible further down Cadillac. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock and has "1880" written on the verso.
