Fire hoses are still spraying the building's entrance and one of its windows on the its Griswold face. Icicles hang from the building's facade, and rubble has settled around its base. A group of people, primarily children, are in the intersection in the foreground. Several of them look toward the camera. A fire engine, and the cloud of smoke coming from it are visible down State Street on the left. The steam cloud of another rises over the intersection of Griswold and Grand River Avenue in the background on the right. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock. "From Alvord & Co. - Mounted sepia-toned photograph taken of a fire engine and a hose apparatus in the intersection of Grand River Avenue, Griswold Street, and Rowland Street (now Shelby Street), behind the ruins of Capitol High School following its fire on January 27, 1893, facing the south. A crowd of spectators have gathered around the steam engine from which a cloud of smoke rises. Firefighers are using hoses to spray both the eastern face of the building along Griswold, and the western one along Shelby in the background. Snow covers the ground, and ice coats the eastern face of the school. Signs for Howard's Sandwichs and Coffee, the Siau Laundering Company, and the Chamber of Commerce are visible along Shelby on the right. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock. "From Alvord & Co. - Sepia-toned glossy photo of the fire tug, DETROITER. The view shows the port side of the vessel underway (probably on the Detroit River). Several crewmembers are standing on the foredeck and one fireman is operating a fire hose nozzle above the pilothouse. - Mounted sepia-toned group portrait photograph of twelve uniformed firefighters posed outside in front of a brick wall. Six men sit in chairs in the front, and six stand behind them. The fifth seated man from the left is identified as Engineer William Mauron[?]. Mauron and the two men to his left all have bugle insignia on their collars indicating their ranks. - Mounted black and white photo of the aerial apparatuses of the Detroit Fire Department's Ladder Companies No.1 and No.3 being used to fight a fire at the Goldberg Brothers' department store on the west side of Woodward Avenue between Grand River and Clifford Street, as viewed from across the street to the northeast. Firefighters work amid broken windows and display cases along the base of the building. A large clearance banner and a "Store for rent" sign are posted on the Grinnell Brothers' Music House next door to Goldberg Brothers. Clough and Warren Company, Pianos; Wood's Ladies Haus; and the William B. Elliott Company are also posted along the block. Several bystanders are also in frame. - Sepia-toned photo of five firemen on a ladder who are fighting a fire. The base of the ladder is located on a fire truck and the top of the ladder has been set to access a window on the top floor of a 4-story brick building. A firehose can be seen along the length of the ladder. One fireman is located at the base of the ladder, another is midway, and three are at the top with the firehose. A sign on the front of the building indicates that a dental office is located inside although the name of the business is partly obscured by the ladder.
