- Blindfolded Indian POW's from South Asia appear to be conducting an exhibition of their powers of concentration. They seem to be working with a bowl of snakes in front of an audience in the prison compound at Zossen-Wuensdorf.

- This is probably a non-commissioned officers' room in Stargard, given the single beds and the variety of furnishings. The occupants enjoy a game of chess, read a newspaper, and leaf through a book. These POW's enjoy a comfortable existence in camp as evidenced by the chairs, benches, tables, ample supply of books on the shelf, cigars, spoon rack, and shelves full of bowls, dinner pails, and ladle. These prisoners also enjoy electric lights in their room. NCO's were responsible for running prison camps for enlisted men and received privileges not extended to most troops.

- An American and a French POW play a game of checkers, while another prisoner drinks tea and a French prisoner writes a letter. Arab, French, and British prisoners watch the competition as spectators. The wide range of nationalities in the photograph depicts the world war the Central Powers faced in Europe.

- The Russian prisoners in this prison camp display the contents of the recreation chest they just received from the YMCA's War Prisoners' Aid organization in Vienna. Each chest held games (Tambola, dominoes, chess, checkers, and Mensch aergere dich nicht), musical instruments (accordions and harmonicas), books, and Russian Orthodox crosses. An unidentified Association secretary, in the civilian clothing and wearing the C.V.J.M. armband), poses with the Russian prisoners. The YMCA committee in the prison camps then sent these recreation chests to POW's working outside the camp in Arbeitskommandos (labor detachments).

- The War Prisoners' Aid Headquarters in Vienna sent these traveling recreation chests to labor detachments to make sure that prisoners detached from their parent camps still benefited from the Red Triangle social program. Each wooden box contained reading material (books, magazines, spiritual tracts, and hymnals), musical instruments (accordions and harmonicas), games (dominoes and Mensch aergere dich nicht), and stationery. Each chest was secured with a lock and chain to prevent the loss of materials.

- While self-government was the foundation of life and camp discipline at the prison camp at Ruhleben, the Germans still spied on the internees to find out what they were doing. In this drawing, a German guard peers through the keyhole to watch men play cards by candlelight.

- Two wounded French prisoners play chess in the ward of a German hospital. Their moves are closely watched by another French patient and a German soldier in a Pickelhaube. The ward is full of recovering patients.

- French and British prisoners are engaged in a "cootie hut" outside of their barracks and next to the laundry at Muenster. The POW's had to regularly take their bedding outside for airing to get rid of lice and other vermin. In this camp, prisoners took their wooden bunks outside as well for cleaning. Some prisoners pass the time by playing board games while others simply sit around talking. German authorities were constantly vigilant to prevent the outbreak of epidemics in the densely crowded barracks of enlisted men.

- This is an interesting view of the non-commissioned officers' quarters at Goettingen. Two French prisoners of war at the table play chess. The room is decorated with photographs and pictures, and the occupants have access to a number of books as well.
