- Doug Noverr, Michigan State University Professor of Writing, Rhetoric and American Cultures, delivers a talk entitled, "Two versions/visions of Irish immigrant history: Ron Howard's 'Far and away' (1992) and Martin Scorsese's 'Gangs of New York' (2002)". Noverr describes the films and their historical context and recounts Irish patterns of immigration, intermarriage with Native Americans, and settlement on the continent. He explains the fear and racism directed at the Irish by the "Know nothings" as well as the machine politics rampant in New York City. Questions and answers conclude the event.
