Kelly talks about going to the University of Arizona and rooming with future TV personality Steve Allen, his early jobs, earning a law degree in night school, the many politicians and state leaders he mentored, and his career aspirations and why he entered public service. Kelly also talks about his perspectives on civil rights, unionism and union political activity, public workers and civil service, how he always sought bipartisan solutions while in office, his run-in with Michigan Governor George Romney and the many people he became acquainted with over his long career.
