- Ralph Willis, head of WMU Maintenance Department, receiving a special citation for 25 years of service to the University from President Miller during the Summer Session commencement on July 24, 1964. Ralph Willis served as the supervisor of custodians since 1947. He was responsible for the physical arrangements for Western's commencement programs for 17 years. - Dr. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. receiving an honorary Doctory of Laws degree at the June 1965 Commencement. Dr. James Miller and Dr. Dale Faunce are standing to either side of Shriver. The photograph appeared in Western Michigan University Magazine Vol. 23 No. 3. Shriver was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, and founded the Job Corps.

- President James Miller conferring an honorary Doctor of Humanities to Russell C. Williams at Commencement on June 6, 1964. Behind James Miller and Russell Williams sits faculty in academic regalia. A blinded World War II Veteran, Williams was the first Chief of the Blind Rehabilitation Section of the Veterans Administration's Department of Medicine and Surgery. Williams had been serving as a counselor for blinded soldiers at Valley Forge, and also participated in both blind rehabilitation training programs at Valley Forge and Avon Old Farms.
