3. Prison Compound at Freiburg in Winter

Notes:
Allied officers stand in the snow in the courtyard of the prison camp at Freiburg. The officers' camp was located in the old university building in the town and the prisoners had access to the quadrangle. As demonstrated by the heavy now on the branches of the trees, a snow storm just ended. The prisoners are carrying wood to heat their quarters.

4. Russian POWs Chop Wood at Muenster

Notes:
Operating a large prison camp facility like Muenster required a large supply of resources and dependence on Allied labor. Russian prisoners saw trees and stack fire wood in huge piles in preparation for the onset of winter. The Germans sought to save coal and prison camps utilized wood to heat stoves and boilers during cold periods.

5. Russian POWs Digging Trenches at Wasbek

Notes:
A labor detachment of Russian prisoners from Wasbek is busy digging a trench and felling trees under the supervision of a German officer (he is holding plans in the center of the photograph). The Germans kept prisoners occupied on a wide range of jobs to help support the local economy. Trenches were important for flood control and irrigation to help support agriculture.

8. French and Belgian Labor Detachment from Muenster

Notes:
A labor detachment of French and Belgian prisoners of war pull a wagon full of firewood on their way back to the prison camp at Muenster. Firewood was an important source of fuel to heat the barracks at night and to run the boilers, ovens, and stoves in the prison camp. Due to the wartime demand for horses by the German Army, the prisoners had to draw the wagons that carried many of the necessities for camp operations.
