- In this installment of "Western Michigan at work," Dr. Willis Dunbar visits the Hamilton Farm Bureau, which claims to be the largest local farm cooperative in the United States. Dunbar describes the gradual expansion of the cooperative into a multi-million dollar industry as it acquired a saw mill, a poultry dressing plant, and a hardware store while expanding the variety of products it provided and improving their quality. Dr. Dunbar focuses on describing the egg production and processing, which forms the backbone of the cooperative, explaining the importance of the 1932 expansion which added cold storage to the plant and the switch to a more controlled environment for raising chickens, all of which led to Hamilton being known for their quality throughout the Midwest.

- On this installment of "Your schools" Dr. Willis Dunbar moderates a discussion about "modern and progressive methods of education" with a panel composed of members of the Kalamazoo Junior Chamber of Commerce, a teacher from Kalamazoo Public Schools, and Dr. Loy Norrix, superintendent of Kalamazoo Public Schools. The Junior Chamber of Commerce is concerned that modern, progressive methods of education will make it more difficult for companies to identify potential employees graduating from the Kalamazoo Public School system because graduates will not have met broadly agreed upon goals. Norrix argues that a modern, progressive method of education leads to higher quality students across the board and enables teachers to reach each student through the methods which the students will respond to best.

Debnam describes the working conditions of African-American nurses in South Carolina, including low pay and rampant discrimination, which lead to their 113 day strike. Debnam explains how the nurses organized, maintained solidarity, had the help of Coretta Scott King, and prevailed. She recounts the growth and decline of Local 1199 and its failure to sustain its membership once the strike succeeded. A question and answer session follows. - Ninety-six-year-old Hilda Smith recalls her career at the REO Motor Car Company, in Lansing, MI, between 1923 and 1964. Smith talks fondly about her family, her job in REO's Human Resources Department, and her retirement after a forty-two year career. She looks through a scrapbook with the interviewers, identifying managers and coworkers and talks about the REO Clubhouse, movies, and caring for her thirteen siblings. - Dr. Willard Bloemendal recalls his career as both physician and bank director during, between, and after World War I and II in Grand Haven, Michigan. Willard was born on May 28, 1901 in Chicago. He grew up in Holland, Michigan and attended Hope College. On June 8, 1928, he opened his doctor's office in Grand Haven and served as County Coroner from 1934-1942. He gives a detailed description of early medical practice in the area and recalls the Elizabeth Hatton Memorial Hospital and the Municipal Hospital. In addition, Willard shares many stories about his life, including how he met his wife at Hope College, his community involvement, the Depression, and the First Presbyterian Church.

- President Barack Obama speaks at a news conference discussing the status of efforts to find a balanced approach on deficit reduction. Obama describes the likely consequences of failure to raise the debt ceiling and a resulting government default. He describes significant increases in interest rates for all consumers, including college, vehicle, and mortgages loans as well as a lowering of the bond rating for the U.S. Government. Obama reiterates his position that cuts can be made if some revenue is raised. He identifies areas in defense and some ways to restructure Social Security and Medicare that would help stabilize spending over the long term. He suggests the wealthy can afford slightly higher taxes to contribute to solving this problem and says it can't all come in cuts. Includes question and answer session.

Burroughs also discusses his work as a Residence Hall Adviser at MSU, his own adjustment to college life, drinking patterns on campus, and what he sees as the value of a college education. Burroughs says that he is an optimist and that in next ten years he expects to be an equine surgeon practicing in Minnesota and that he hopes to start his own family.

- The only known recording of President Benjamin Harrison presumably made years after his presidency by Giuseppe Bettini, sometime between 1894 and 1899. This modern recording features a narrator explaining how Harrison's voice was recorded and features the 1814 campaign song of Harrison's grandfather "Old Tippecanoe," President William Henry Harrison, which was resurrected for Benjamin's 1888 campaign. The Library of Congress says only one copy of the recording has been found and is located at the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Home and this recording was made from that recording.

- Ajovi Scott-Emuakpor discusses his international career as a geneticist, physician, faculty member and administrator, much of it spent in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development at Michigan State University. Ajovi recalls coming to MSU from Nigeria in 1965 as an undergraduate, joining the department as a graduate student in 1968 and working with the original faculty. He describes the college's early curriculum and focus on patient care and recognizes the uniqueness of pioneering efforts now copied at many other institutions. Ajovi also talks about returning to Nigeria to become Director of the Institute of Child Health and later coming back to MSU as a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Human Development. He says that collegiality in the department has now waned in the face of administration changes, retirements, and plans to move the school to Grand Rapids. Sociology Professor Meritus Dr. David J. Kallen conducts the interview as part of the MSU Department of Pediatrics and Human Development Oral History Project.
