- Now serving his third term, Mayor George Heartwell took office on January 1, 2004. During his tenure, City government has implemented a variety of environmental measures, including purchase of renewable resource energy, use of alternative fuels in city vehicles, continued attention to water quality in the Grand River, and widespread implementation of energy conservation measures. In January 2007 the United Nations recognized Grand Rapids as a โRegional Center of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development.โ
Grand Rapids is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable cities in America. In 2010 the US Chamber of Commerce gave Grand Rapids the โNationโs Most Sustainable Cityโ award, and in 2012 Mayor Heartwell was given the first place Climate Protection Award by the US Conference of Mayors.
With twenty-two colleges or universities in the metropolitan area, Grand Rapids is known as a knowledge center. Human medicine, medical education, and health research is the most rapidly growing economic cluster. Even during times of severe economic downturn, Grand Rapids has shown remarkable economic resiliency.
George Heartwell is married to Susan who directs the Student Advancement Foundation. George and Susan are proud parents of three adult children and six extraordinary grandchildren.

- Dr. Kendrik was a bacteriologist with the Mihcigan Department of Health who developed (with Grace Eldering) the first successful vaccine for whooping cough in the 1930s, which all but eliminated a disease that had taken the lives of thousands of children. Kendrik and Eldering later combined shots for diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus into the single DPT vaccine given to children today.

Swensberg (1835-1897) came to Grand Rapids in 1866 and founded the Grand Rapids Commercial College, also known as Grand Rapids Business College, which later became Davenport University. He taught at the school for over twenty years. He later was the owner and publisher/editor of the Telegram-Herald newspaper. In addition, he was the president of the Valley City Milling company, a founder of the Phoenix Furniture Company, a founder of the Aldine Manufacturing Company, a director of the Grand Rapids Savings Bank, and director of the Grand Rapids Street Railway Company. He was also an organizer of the local Y.M.C.A. and helped to establish the city's first free library.

- Democrat. A young pharmacist when he arrived in 1868. Afterward became bookkeeper in a wholesale grocery firm and rose to become partner in 1883. As city treasurer in 1891 was discovered to have embezzled $16,000 but escaped prosecution. As mayor was implicated in notorious water scandal but trial ended in hung jury. Lost as "reform" candidate against George Ellis in 1914.
