- Menu from the officers' prison camp at Villingen for the week of 2-8 August 1915. The menu identifies the daily meal planned for Allied officers, with coffee and sugar for breakfast, and a variety of lunches and dinners. The portion provided to each POW is given in grams, including a daily allowance of 300 grams of bread. To inform the prisoners' family and friends of the good treatment they received in prison camp, the Germans printed menus on envelopes for distribution to the prisoners.

- German non-commissioned officers carefully inspect food parcels for contraband while British, Scottish, and French prisoners prepare to distribute the censor-approved packets to fellow prisoners. German enthusiasm for detecting banned items sometimes spoiled food preservation by opening cans and tins or cutting through bread and meat products.

- This table shows the reductions in German food rations between May 1916 and June 1919 for a variety of foods. The statistics clearly indicate the effectiveness of the Allied blockade of German food imports as people had to give up a variety of foods. Prisoners of war also experienced these food shortages, although Allied prisoners received the same rations as German troops. While the reduction in rations had little effect on American, British, and French POW's, because they received regular food parcels from home, the impact of lowered nutritional standards had a serious impact on Russian, Serbian, Romanian, and Italian prisoners.

- French, Belgian, and Russian prisoners line up outdoors for their allocation of hot soup from the large metal and wooden pots steaming on the ground in the prison compound at Darmstadt. Once the POW's received their rations, they returned to their barracks to eat their meal.

- A group of twelve Polish officers relax in their relatively large prison cell (number 10) at Marmosa-Sziget. They are eating their meals of soup in their room. The cell appears to be well provisioned with tables, chairs, and shelves full of books.

- French and Belgian prisoners cook food on an outdoor grill from their packages sent from home in the prison compound at Grafenwoehr. POW's were not permitted to cook their food parcels inside their barracks due to the threat of fire. During the winter months, when stoves heated the interior of their quarters, POW's could do some limited cooking indoors.

- English non-commissioned officers entertain German scholars, Alois Brandl and Wilhelm Doegen, in their barrack at Quedlinburg. They are enjoying five o'clock tea and the table appears to be well-stocked. The German civilians were part of the Deutsche Kommission which investigated conditions in prison camps.

- Russian prisoners line up for their meal outside the camp kitchen at Reichenberg and await the order from the Austrian non-commissioned officer for the soup distribution to begin. Ration distribution was conducted on an individual basis.

- French and Belgian prisoners of war line up in the compound at Eichstaett with their soup bowls waiting for their evening dinner ration. The POW's went to the camp kitchen to receive their rations. The photograph also shows one of the stone buildings that made up the prison facility.

- The opening of the Tea Room of the Association hut is well attended by Russian prisoners at Groedig. While POW's purchase their tea at the window on the left, a prisoner band serenades the patrons in the rear of the room to the right. The tea room is also equipped with a gramophone to provide entertainment when the band is not playing.
