- Description:
- In "History and Growth of the Lansing Public Schools" (vol. 2, 1944-1962) by Anna L. Brewer, it is noted that the land this school occupied was purchased in 1892. A two-room school named Lesher Place School opened there in September of that year for grades one through four. In 1895 its name was changed to East Park School, which can be seen in the white plaque above the door in this photograph. In 1916 the school was replaced with a new building. When the park across the street had its name changed to Oak Park in 1926, the school followed suit.

- Abigail Rogers was a pioneer for the school. She and her sister Delia worked to achieve education for women. The school opened in 1855 originally in the State Capitol Building until the school was constructed in 1858. James Turner was also involved in securing funds for the school. Located at the future site of the School for the Blind at the head of West Grand River on North Pine Street. This is the Michigan Female College as it appeared on the "Map of the Counties of Ingham and Livingston, Michigan" published by Geil, Harley & Siverd in 1859. Evidently, the artist had not seen the actual building. Text on photo: "View of Female College at Lansing Mich. Miss A.C. Rogers, Principal. H.L. Olcott Builder." Four copies.
