Fire hoses are still spraying the building's entrance and one of its windows on the its Griswold face. Icicles hang from the building's facade, and rubble has settled around its base. A group of people, primarily children, are in the intersection in the foreground. Several of them look toward the camera. A fire engine, and the cloud of smoke coming from it are visible down State Street on the left. - Mounted sepia-toned photograph taken of a fire engine and a hose apparatus in the intersection of Grand River Avenue, Griswold Street, and Rowland Street (now Shelby Street), behind the ruins of Capitol High School following its fire on January 27, 1893, facing the south. A crowd of spectators have gathered around the steam engine from which a cloud of smoke rises. Firefighers are using hoses to spray both the eastern face of the building along Griswold, and the western one along Shelby in the background. Snow covers the ground, and ice coats the eastern face of the school. Signs for Howard's Sandwichs and Coffee, the Siau Laundering Company, and the Chamber of Commerce are visible along Shelby on the right. The photo is mounted on beige cardstock. "From Alvord & Co.
