- Hardcover ledger book, bound in a grey cover printed with "Journal," used by Martin Cooney, the Superintendent of Horses for the Detroit Fire Department to record both the shifts and absences of workers at the department's supply stables, spanning February 18, 1902 to January 13, 1907, as well as the supply and consumption of hay and oats by the department's horses, from January 1, 1902 to December 15, 1906. The worker's arrivals and departures are listed on pages 3 through 19, while the supply of feed is documented on pages 1 and 2, as well as 164 through 200. "Supply Stables" and "Chief Martin Cooney" are handwritten on the front free endpaper.

The book was manufactured by the Gregory, Mayer and Thom Company of Detroit, and it contains the pre-printed column headers, "date," "color," "sex," "age," "weight," "price," "bought of," and "how disposed of." - Black and white print, presumably an enlargement of a glass negative, showing a horse with a bridle, yolk, and harness trapped in mud up to its shoulder along East Nevada Avenue. A crowd is gathered around the horse, visible in frame as feet and legs among piles of bricks and boards on the far side of the horse, and shadows of men in hats in the foreground. A partially out of frame man on the left pulls a chain in an effort to free the horse. Another partially out of frame man in front of him holds the end of a rope tied to the horse.
