- Hardcover ledger book, bound in a grey cover printed with "Journal," used by Martin Cooney, the Superintendent of Horses for the Detroit Fire Department to record both the shifts and absences of workers at the department's supply stables, spanning February 18, 1902 to January 13, 1907, as well as the supply and consumption of hay and oats by the department's horses, from January 1, 1902 to December 15, 1906. The worker's arrivals and departures are listed on pages 3 through 19, while the supply of feed is documented on pages 1 and 2, as well as 164 through 200. "Supply Stables" and "Chief Martin Cooney" are handwritten on the front free endpaper.

The book was manufactured by the Gregory, Mayer and Thom Company of Detroit, and it contains the pre-printed column headers, "date," "color," "sex," "age," "weight," "price," "bought of," and "how disposed of." Handwriting on the verso shows "D.F.D. approx. 1902. Eng. 9 exercise wagon shown with the steamer horses. If a fire company had no runs within a 24 hour period, the horses were exercised in local streets near the station houses. In the event of a fire, they would be notified to return to the station by ringing the tower bell."

The photo shows a horse-drawn fire engine with one fireman in the driver's seat, three firemen standing on the sidewalk, and two firemen standing beside the rear wheel of the fire engine. Several bystanders are also visible. A brick fire station building is visible in the background. Four square decorative motifs that represent various tools of the fire department can be seen along the face of the fire station building. The name, "M. R. Freeman," is stamped in black ink in the lower right corner of the print.

- Black and white print negative depicting a harness race. A pair of horses, each pulling a driver in a sulky race from the left edge of the frame. The announcer's booth, bearing the date July 17, 1888 is in the center of the frame. A row of spectators is at the bottom of the frame. - Black and white print, presumably an enlargement of a glass negative, showing a horse with a bridle, yolk, and harness trapped in mud up to its shoulder along East Nevada Avenue. A crowd is gathered around the horse, visible in frame as feet and legs among piles of bricks and boards on the far side of the horse, and shadows of men in hats in the foreground. A partially out of frame man on the left pulls a chain in an effort to free the horse. Another partially out of frame man in front of him holds the end of a rope tied to the horse. A backwards caption stretches across the bottom of the frame, "[S]tuck in mud on E. Nevada Ave. Detroit, Mich. 191[...]."
