- A group of twelve Polish officers relax in their relatively large prison cell (number 10) at Marmosa-Sziget. They are eating their meals of soup in their room. The cell appears to be well provisioned with tables, chairs, and shelves full of books.

- This drawing shows an internee, clad in bathrobe and sandals, holding a pot of hot cocoa in the prison camp compound at Ruhleben. Incarceration oftehn encouraged the development of interesting characters inside prison camps. Behind him is a long line of prisoners, waiting to receive hot water from the camp canteen. There were two large boilers inside the building, which provided the prisoners with hot water to make tea or cocoa.

- A view of the kitchen in Minden II, with the German non-commissioned officer supervisors in the foreground and the French POW kitchen staff in the rear. The day's menu (21 July 1915) is written on a chalk board. Breakfast consisted of coffee; lunch featured beef and potato soup; and dinner offered herring and potatoes.

- French and Belgian prisoners cook food on an outdoor grill from their packages sent from home in the prison compound at Grafenwoehr. POW's were not permitted to cook their food parcels inside their barracks due to the threat of fire. During the winter months, when stoves heated the interior of their quarters, POW's could do some limited cooking indoors.

- These former British prisoners were released by the Germans under the terms of the Armistice and had to be admitted to a military hospital because they suffered from disease and malnutrition as a result of their captivity.

- Russian prisoners prepare to slaughter a cow in the butcher shop in the prison camp of Freistadt, under the supervision of an Austrian non-commissioned officer. Several sides of beef hang from the walls of the shop, ready to be cut up for cooking.

- French officers receive their soup rations at the reprisal camp at Szczuezyn in Lithuania in 1916. Conditions in this camp were extremely harsh for the captives.

- English non-commissioned officers entertain German scholars, Alois Brandl and Wilhelm Doegen, in their barrack at Quedlinburg. They are enjoying five o'clock tea and the table appears to be well-stocked. The German civilians were part of the Deutsche Kommission which investigated conditions in prison camps.

- A secret photograph of dead Italian prisoners lying on the floor in the prison camp at Siegmundsherberg. The devastating effects of starvation can be seen by the protruding bones on these bodies. A repatriated POW smuggled this photograph into Switzerland during the war and it was used by the Italians to demonstrate the terrible conditions which existed in Dual Monarchy prison camps.

- Russian prisoners work on rabbit hutches in the prison camp at Aschaffenburg. Rabbit meat helped to diversify the diets of the prisoners and added extra meat to the soup.
