The drawing consists of black and red ink on linen and shows a plan view of the proposed cabin layout for the wooden-hulled, propeller-driven, passenger steamships. The plan was prepared at a scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot by Frank E. Kirby for the Detroit Dry Dock Company and is dated May, 1882. (Steamer numbers 59 and 60 were the Detroit Dry Dock hull numbers for the passenger steamships that were known as F.&P.M. No. 1 and F.&P.M. No. 2, respectively.)

The cover bears a painting of the CITY OF DETROIT III sailing away from a sun rise or sun set, as another passenger steamer travels in the distance. The back cover lists the schedule for the WESTERN STATES, EASTERN STATES, CITY OF DETROIT II, and CITY OF ST. IGNACE of the Detroit and Cleveland Division, the CITY OF DETROIT III and CITY OF CLEVELAND III of the Detroit and Buffalo Division, and the CITY OF ALPENA II and CITY OF MACKINAC II of the Mackinac Division. The interior contains a map of routes and a table of fares.
