- Description:
- Mildred Blandford talks about her service as a secretary in the American Red Cross during World War Two. Blandford, who served from August 1944 to November 1945, says that she joined the Red Cross for overseas adventure and spent most of her time stationed at the 194th General Hospital in Paris. She says that she was quartered in a Parisian hotel with maid service, but that service in the hospital was no picnic and meant leaving her secretarial duties often to help care for the onslaught of wounded soldiers. After VE Day, Blandford says that she volunteered for duty in the Pacific and was sent to Okinawa where she found herself living in a tent rather than luxury hotel. She talks about her daily tasks and again helping out with wounded G.I.s. and describes two typhoons that hit the island and how staff tried to protect the patients in the tent hospital from the storm. At war's end, Blandford says that she returned to Louisville to work, but later went back to Paris for school and to work for NATO. Blandford is interviewed by Dorothy M. Harrison.

- Description:
- In this installment of "Know your city," Dr. Willis Dunbar explores the treatment of African Americans in Kalamazoo. Dunbar summarizes the findings of a 1945 study carried out jointly by the Social Action Committee of the Kalamazoo County Council of Churches and the Council of Social Agencies under the supervision of the Fisk University Social Science Institute, focusing on employment demographics and housing conditions. In order to illustrate and elaborate on the findings of this report, three African Americans from around Kalamazoo speak about their experiences with employment and housing. John Reed, the secretary of the Council of Social Agencies, and Lee Roy Pettiford, Director of the Douglass Community Center, discuss the current conditions for African Americans in Kalamazoo and conclude that little has changed since the Fisk University report in 1945. Pauline Byrd Taylor, of the Citizen Council on Human Relations, speaks urgently about the need to take action and actively seek greater equality in Kalamazoo.

- Erik Nordberg, director of the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, delivers a talk entitled, "At home along the picket line : company housing and the 1913 Michigan Copper Strike," at the Michigan State University Museum. Nordberg describes housing options available to Michigan mine workers at the turn of the Twentieth Century and describes the housing incentives offered by the mining companies to attract a married, male work force. Lower living costs, Nordberg says, allowed coal companies to pay lower wages and he compares the range of incentives in different mining locations. Nordberg answers questions from the audience. Nordberg is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and co-sponsored by the MSU Center for Gender in Global Context, and the MSU Women's Resource Center. Part of the University's Project 60/50. Held at the MSU Museum.

- Description:
- This is a collection of approximately 500,000 pages of microform material from one or more departments of the City of Lansing, which date from 1964 to about 1985. Much of the material is undated, and the bulk of what has dates was produced in the late 1970s. Based on subject titles typed onto each microfiche sleeve, a large portion of the material is related to Lansing's participation in the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant program. This program, initiated in 1974 during the administration of President Gerald Ford, attempts to eliminate poverty and urban blight with control largely placed in the hands of state and local authorities. Typical materials in this collection include minutes and agendas for various committees such as Zoning or Parks and Recreation, correspondence, chronological files, interoffice files, and subject files. See the linked spreadsheet (.xlsx format) for a listing of all subjects represented in this collection. To request any of the material, note the item number, name, and box it appears in.
