Handwritten text on the upper and lower edges of the photo shows "Lonyo Road Sewer before cave in" and "Detroit, Sept., 1919." The view shows a wide, excavated trench in the foreground along with track-mounted steel forms for constructing a large, double-barrel cast-in-place concrete sewer.

The view shows five workmen who are mixing and pouring concrete into the wooden forms on the trusses in order to create one of the bridge counterweights. The view shows two workmen who are standing between two large steel buckets that are used for placing concrete underwater. The workmen appear to be attaching cables and chains to the tops of the buckets so that they can be lifted into position by a construction crane.

The view shows two workmen who are inside the top of caisson #4 (near lower left corner of photo) while two other workers are standing nearby on the railroad track. A concrete bucket is suspended overhead from the construction crane that can be seen in the center right foreground area of the photo. The vertical reinforcing bars of caisson #3 can be seen to the right and a fifth worker can be seen standing on the railroad tracks between the two caissons. A second construction crane and pile of debris are visible in the background on the other side of the tracks. The Rouge River (looking downstream) is also visible in the background and a construction barge can be seen along the near shore. Various buildings and stacks of lumber can be seen on the far shore of the river.

The view looks northwestward (upstream) along the Rouge River and shows the old railroad swing bridge on the left as well as the new single leaf Strauss trunnion bascule bridge on the right. - Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing the old M.C.R.R. railroad swing bridge being removed. The view looks northwestward across the Rouge River and shows the old bridge being loaded onto barges. It appears that two barges had been partially filled with water in order to lower their freeboard elevations. The barges were then moved under the old bridge and are now being pumped out as seen by the steam-powered pumps that are operating on both barges. As the pumping continues, the rising barges will lift the old bridge off of its foundation so that it can be towed away. Many workmen are standing on the old bridge and on the two barges.
