Bust or Lamp Fragment; Fayoum; Sculpture and Figurines; Lamps; Clay (unfired)
Broken off below aegis. Moulded base missing. Clay corroded and discolored with purple and yellow patches. Head with delicate facial inclines slightly to left. Double neckline. Hair along forehead shown by vague horizontal striations. Wears a scaly aegis with Gorgon’s head in center, over a chiton gathered at shoulders. On head she wears a corinthian helmet with a peked rim and short, stubby crest. Originally a slender pedestal beneath the aegis rested on a rectangular plinth, from which a miniature oval lamp with pointed nozzle projected on right. Represented to below rib cage. Back unindicated except for ridge in surface to show bottom of helmet. Hollow moulded.
