According to local sports researcher Bob Schichtel, Gene Broene GR Christian '39 was an All City '39 and All State player on Christian High's Class B State Championship team in 1938. Recently he was named by BCAM, the state basketball coaches association, as the 1939 Retro Mr. Basketball. He was the top vote getter among coaches in the Detroit Free Press All State balloting. According to BCAM narrative "he could do everything right." Broene led Christian to a state title in 1938 and a state runner-up honors in 1939. He later played at Calvin eventually graduating from the U of M. He is seen wearing the uniform of Pastoor Ford, a superior recreational team in the late forties.
