Detail view of first layer of a plaster walking cast applied to the lower leg of a patient, Stryker Corporation, Kalamazoo, Michigan

Description:

A demonstration photograph showing the padding layer in building a Short Walking Casts with a "Stryker Heel" on the lower extremity of a patient. The patient is laying stomach down on an exam table, with her right foot raised. The photograph was part of a series of ten showing the preparation and removing of a show leg cast with a cutter. The photograph was taken for Dr. Stryker (Stryker Corporation) of Kalamazoo, Michigan. An article in the Kalamazoo Gazette, dated March 3, 1946, reported that the three principal products invented between 1942-1946 by Dr. Stryker's Orthopedic Frame Company were the turning frames for bedfast persons, the cast cutter and the "Stryker Heel" for walking casts.
