Oral history interview with Henry Van Dyke and Bessie Chandler Van Dyke conducted over the phone by Lew Carlson on May 3, 1990. Both attended Western State Normal in the 1920s. They discuss their early childhood in Kalamazoo, coming to WMU, campus life for black students, classes, notable students including Merz Tate, and influential professors. Henry Van Dyke also describes his academic work in Indonesia. Bessie Van Dyke describes returning to WMU to finish her bachelors. Later, she received her masters from WMU and the Univeristy of Michigan in English Literature in 1947.
