Oral history interview with J. Towner Smith conducted by Lewis Carlson on May 5, 1989. J. Towner Smith was WMU’s first All-American. He was a long time track coach, worked in counseling center and was a long time Dean of Men. He discusses his early childhood, high school sports, student life at WMU, and success in track. Years after graduation, he returned to WMU as a coach in 1939. He recollects stories of coaching, memorable WMU coaches, students and athletes, and stories of interacting for President Waldo. Smith retired in July 1966 after 45 years at WMU.
