Oral history interview with Lloyd Schmaltz conducted by Lewis Carlson on November 17, 1990. Lloyd Schmaltz was the chairman of the Geology Department at WMU for 29 years. Schmaltz recalls his early education, entering the service in 1946 and meeting a friend in the Marines who inspired him to pursue a degree in geology. He describes continuing education, influential professors at various universities, and coming to WMU in 1959. He was hired into the Geology Department where he worked with Oscar Horst to build up the geology program. He also discusses faculty within the department, changes and difficulties of taking field trips with students, growth of the department, and notable students. He recalls the yearly field trips to the Grand Canyon, and how the trip changed over the years. He also comments on the direction of WMU during his tenure.
