Oral history interview with Louis “Bo” Mallard, conducted by Lewis Carlson on May 24, 1989. Mallard recollects his teammates and coaches during his time as a student athlete in football and track at Western State Teachers College in the 1930s. Mallard also discusses his 38-year career as a head coach at Gary Roosevelt High School coaching football and, later, basketball and track. He briefly names a few of the star students he coached including Ike Owens, George Taliaferro and Emanuel “Manny” Newsome. Mallard recollects how he helped get Newsome recruited by WMU coaches Pat Clysdale and Don Boven in 1960. Mallard was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977. Mallard retired in 1976 as athletic director.
