Oral history interview with Oscar Johnson, conducted by Lewis Carlson on May 17, 1989. Oscar “Okie” Johnson was a basketball, baseball and football player at WMU in the 1920s. He was recruited by Bill Spaulding. Johnson briefly discusses his impressions of Bill Spaulding and Buck Read as well as campus life. He discusses several of the athletes he played with including Leo Redmond and Harry Potter. He graduated in 1925 and took a position as head coach at Muskegon Heights in 1927 where he was a long time successful coach. He discusses the students at Muskegon and his coaching experiences. After retiring in 1964, he continued to coach in Baldwin, Michigan. He briefly discussed how football and basketball have changed over the years. Oscar Johnson passed away in 1991.
