Oral history interview with William Kowalski, conducted by Robert N. Karrar on November 10, 1993 at Walwood Union in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Kowalski discusses his childhood in Muskegon, Michigan and his eventual arrival at Western Michigan University in 1942. He reminiscences about the attack on Pearl Harbor, the city of Kalamazoo, and WMU’s campus in the early 1940s. He discusses the students including women and blacks, the sports facilities, the library, the V-12 program, memorable professors and coaches, and his eventual military career during World War II. He later worked at WMU as the Director of Campus Planning. He briefly discusses the growth of the West Campus (later, Main Campus) during the 1950s. Kowalski retired as the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Engineering in 1985. He passed away June 18, 2014.
