Paul Pommer correspondence, 1916-12-08, World War I
Postcard from musketeer Paul Pommer, addressed to the family of Gust. (Gustav) Pommer in Frankfurt, Germany. Postmarked Darmstadt, Übungsplatz, December 12, 1916. The postcard’s illustration shows an imperial German flag decorated with wreaths, ribbons and a sword. In the background are the silhouettes of soldiers. Below is written a patriotic phrase, ”Fest steht und treu die Wacht am Rhein,” which roughly translates into, “Firm and true stands the Watch on the Rhine.” Pommer’s brief note describes recent activities with other young soldiers.
