In front of a "temple of liberty," a pitched battle rages between African Americans and their supporters and slaveholders and their supporters. At right, an official with a star on his hat sits on the shoulders of Daniel Webster, who is on all fours and complains, "This, though constitutional, is 'extremely disagreeable.'" At left, William Lloyd Garrison points a pistol at the official, protecting an African American woman.; Weitenkampf suggests that E.C. may be Edward Williams Clay, but Reilly points out that signature, style, and politics alike are atypical of Clay, and suggests the date and Boston imprint.
