- Democrat. Originally a farmer near Sparta, involvement in township affairs led to election as county treasurer in 1886, succeeding his brother. Elected Grand Rapids city treasurer 1897-99 and caught embezzling $13,500 but was covered by bondsmen and escaped prosecution. Had manufacturing interests on West Side and was president of 5th National Bank.

- Now serving his third term, Mayor George Heartwell took office on January 1, 2004. During his tenure, City government has implemented a variety of environmental measures, including purchase of renewable resource energy, use of alternative fuels in city vehicles, continued attention to water quality in the Grand River, and widespread implementation of energy conservation measures. In January 2007 the United Nations recognized Grand Rapids as a “Regional Center of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development.”
Grand Rapids is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable cities in America. In 2010 the US Chamber of Commerce gave Grand Rapids the “Nation’s Most Sustainable City” award, and in 2012 Mayor Heartwell was given the first place Climate Protection Award by the US Conference of Mayors.
With twenty-two colleges or universities in the metropolitan area, Grand Rapids is known as a knowledge center. Human medicine, medical education, and health research is the most rapidly growing economic cluster. Even during times of severe economic downturn, Grand Rapids has shown remarkable economic resiliency.
George Heartwell is married to Susan who directs the Student Advancement Foundation. George and Susan are proud parents of three adult children and six extraordinary grandchildren.

- Dr. Kendrik was a bacteriologist with the Mihcigan Department of Health who developed (with Grace Eldering) the first successful vaccine for whooping cough in the 1930s, which all but eliminated a disease that had taken the lives of thousands of children. Kendrik and Eldering later combined shots for diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus into the single DPT vaccine given to children today.

- Professor Conrad G. Swensberg (1835-1897) came to Grand Rapids in 1866 and founded the Grand Rapids Commercial College, also known as Grand Rapids Business College, which later became Davenport University. He taught at the school for over twenty years. He later was the owner and publisher/editor of the Telegram-Herald newspaper. In addition, he was the president of the Valley City Milling company, a founder of the Phoenix Furniture Company, a founder of the Aldine Manufacturing Company, a director of the Grand Rapids Savings Bank, and director of the Grand Rapids Street Railway Company. He was also an organizer of the local Y.M.C.A. and helped to establish the city's first free library.

A self-made hardware merchant who came to Grand Rapids as a boy of 17 and eventually founded the Foster-Stevens Company, he was noted as kind-hearted and fair. Later elected to U.S. Congress, died in office.

As city treasurer in 1891 was discovered to have embezzled $16,000 but escaped prosecution. As mayor was implicated in notorious water scandal but trial ended in hung jury. Lost as "reform" candidate against George Ellis in 1914.

- Martin L. Sweet came to Grand Rapids in 1846 and soon after built a flour mill, the Grand Rapids City mills. In 1860 he became mayor of Grand Rapids. And in 1868 he sold his mill and built the Sweet's Hotel, which stood on the site of the Pantlind Hotel and now the Amway Grand at the northwest corner of Pearl and Monroe. He was also involved in banking and the lumber business.

Partner in Averill & Briggs store, 1858-62. Raised Company A, 7th Michigan Cavalry, served from 2nd Lt. to Colonel, 1862-65, in Civil War and Indian Wars. Came to Grand Rapids 1866; married Julia, daughter of John W. Pierce, went into partnership with father-in-law in dry goods firm Pierce & Briggs, 1866-69. State representative, 1869-70. Secretary-treasurer of Michigan Barrel Co. 1870-87. First president of G.R. Board of Trade 1887-90. Postmaster at G.R. 1890-94. Vice-president of National City Bank 1894-98. Was well-known as art connoisseur and collector, an early patron of Mathias Alten. Built house at 143 Lafayette NE in 1909, designed to display his collection. As one of the honest aldermen helped bring to light water scandals of the early 1900s. Elected to first city commission in 1917, and as mayor dealt with problems arising from World War I.
