- Two men wearing aprons and boots attend to a hoofed animal, which is strapped to a table in a laboratory. The Parke, Davis and Company was incorporated in the 1870s in Detroit, Michigan. The pharmaceutical company opened a facility in Avon Township in 1908, which has the distinction of being the first of its kind to hold a license for the manufacture of vaccines and other biological-based drugs in the United States. Commonly referred to as the Parkedale Farm or Parke-Davis Farm, it was comprised of land along Parkdale Road, bordered by Miller Avenue on the west, Van Hoosen Farm on the north, Dequindre Road on the east, the Michigan Central Railroad (MCR) on the south. Most of the farm buildings were demolished in 1999, but a few original structures remain. - Description:
- This article examines the type, objectives and availability of agricultural programmes on Nigerian television based on an examination of the social structure. Agricultural programmes were limited in focus, perspective and range of issues treated. The programmes were mainly concerned with the transfer of technology and ideas to the neglect of other crucial socio-structural issues. Because it has been difficult to get sponsors for agricultural programmes, unlike entertainment programmes which dominate the prime viewing hours, the policy of commercialisation is responsible for the lack of agricultural programmes on Nigerian television.

- Description:
- This paper reports and discusses the findings of a study conducted to investigate the correlation between rural farmers' responsiveness to agricultural innovations and the communication patterns used to popularize such innovations. The results of the survey carried out in this study showed that neither education nor the use of mass media has a significant association with the adoption of agricultural innovations. Personal communication sources were found to be more effective than mass communication sources in creating the necessary awareness and, hence, influencing the adoption of agricultural innovations.

- A group of Russian prisoners of war turn over the soil in a field in Spring 1915 in preparation for the planting of potatoes. The Germans began to recognize that idle prisoners in camps were a drain on the war economy and these labor detachments, especially in agricultural production, would become very common across Germany.

- Oral history interview with Richard Walsworth. Interviewed by Phil Carter. Hart, Michigan. English language. June 18, 2016. Dick Walsworth is a local farmer from Oceana County. His life story highlights the challenges of maintaining his agricultural business, largely the asparagus industry, viable and competitive with the challenge of emerging global market forces. In this interview, Walsworth shares his testimony of the social, cultural, technologic, and industrial changes that have occurred in the Oceana area since his youth. This rich historical account from the perspective of a local farmer with a lifetime of experience in the agricultural world depicts the challenges ahead in the future to keep our farms and vegetables production alive. To this Walsworth declares that the future depends on migrant labor which is becoming increasingly short on supply since "the next generations are at least getting a high school education [...] they're not going to do field work." Walsworth also shares his deep concern with immigration policy, or lack of governmental policy, that makes it harder on local businesses to keep their labor flow steady and consistent compared to the needs of the industry in a state and national level.

- Description:
- Novelist, poet, and mixed media artist Janet Kauffman, Professor of English at Eastern Michigan University, talks about her farming experience and writing about farms, especially the discrepancy between the romantic ideal of family farms and the reality of modern, industrial farms in rural Michigan. Kauffman talks about her book "Trespassing: Dirt Stories and Field Notes," and reads from "The Fantasy of the Clip Art Farm." Arthur Versluis, Michigan State University Professor and Chair of Religious Studies, reflects on his farming experience in Ionia County. He defends the operations of some factory farms, even though he doesn't endorse many of their methods and suggests that owners and operators can be responsive to neighbors. Wynne Wright from both the MSU Department of Sociology and the MSU Department of Community Sustainability describes her farming experiences then comments on the relationship between agriculture and gender and the relationship between community and the form agriculture eventually takes. Craig Harris from the MSU Department of Sociology, suggests Kauffman's book functions as autobiography, history, empirical description, and as an analytical study of rural agricultural development. He also says, however, that the book is lacking in each area and that "highly generalized claims" actually undercut possible support for the author's positions. Kauffman reacts by saying that she thinks of the book as a "nightmare rant" rather than an academic work. She also says that she tried to make comprehensible the immediacy of the damage being done by farming rather than write a sociological study of farming. The panel answers questions from the audience. The session is convened by MSU Professor of English Ned Watts. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Michigan Writers Series.
