This is a detail of the damper box walls shown in photograph #43501. They are under quite a lot more heat at the right hand side than at the left. Probably a difference of three or four cones, those on the right hand, however, being constantly at a temperature which would melt cone 18 on the passing cars; also being under a slightly reducing temperature, while the brick at the left hand are only exposed a greater part of the time to pure air, particularly on the upper left hand corner.

Note particularly the three B mix carborundum chambers in the right foreground. These are right next to the clay chambers and are the last three carborundum chambers in the series of 23. The joints have been scraped a little to show the condition. The chambers have oxidized very badly; particularly at the top where they can be crumbled and ground between the thumb and the palm of the hand. These chambers will be replaced with clay chambers as they heat is not excessive. Note particularly the last of the three chambers - the swelling across the face just above the cenger. This is badly oxidized, and is probably an indication of what would happen to all of the chambers within a very short time.

Looking down the carbofrax B muffles in the same direction as the gases pass. This shows the amount of silica on the surface: also the condition of the joints. Unfortunately the picture is out of focus and does not show the joints as well as it should. However, they are very much better than they were in the case of the previous failure. The mortar used in these joints is a mixture of 80% carborundum 14 and finer, 20% clay, and in no case has attached the carborundum chambers. Previously a mixture of clay and alumina was used and altho the mortar was not attached the carborundum had been eaten away on both sides permitting leaks. These chambers were in the kiln not only during this burning but during the previous burning as well, this is, altogether about fourteen operating months.
