- Woman's blue wool knit dress; shift style with hidden elastic waist, boat neckline, and cap sleeves. The dress has white, ribbon top knit stripes 1/4" wide in groups of four, running horizontally down the length of the dress. The 1" hem is secured with a stockinet stitch. One of the first knit dreses imported from Italy.

2. Women's suit with divided skirt and matching jacket of tan linen from the early twentieth century
- Description:
- A woman's suit that consists of divided skirt and matching jacket of tan linen. The tailored suit has a long jacket with four buttons in front, and two buttons on the cuff of each sleeve. The skirt has eleven buttons on the panel that conceals the pants, and a separate belt. Note: Helen Andrus Merrell Howard, daughter of Dr. Frank D. Howard, married Francis (C.or E.)Merrell c. 1908, and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Original records call this a bicycling suit, but it might have been worn as a riding habit while out west. She later returned to Detroit.

- This two piece dress may have been worn as a wedding gown or was part of a trousseau. It is made of gold-color silk satin, and the bodice is boned with deep points front and back. It has a laced center front closing with elbow length sleeves. The deep "U" neckline is filled with ecru lace and embroidered net, and has fringed ruching. There is lace around bottom of the bodice and at the sleeves. The bustle-back skirt has a very long train with irregular pleats. The front hem has pleated, up-turned curves. The dress has a draped panel at its left side, and is lined with buckram. There is a hook-and-eye closure at the waist. The bodice is labeled Newcomb Endicott, Detroit. It was possibly worn by Kate Bock of Battle Creek, who married George W. Tanner of Indianapolis, October 2, 1882.

- Woman's wine color, two piece wool suit, having a three quarter length coat/jacket with a large square collar of wine velvet that is edged with black fur. The coat/jacket's sleeves are tightly fitted with wide cuffs of velvet and fur to match the collar. Additionally, the fitted coat/jacket has a loose flap-like peplum, and three pleats at each side of the waist. Dark, plain wood buttons are down the front of the jacket and serve as a decoration on the peplum, and at each side of the back. The skirt is slightly flared and plain in front, and is gathered into the waistband in the back. A button-on belt is around the back of the skirt only. Worn by the donor's neighbor: Mrs. Ira Kelly. Label: "B. Siegel Co., Detroit." There is an Ira Kelly listed in the 1921-22 City Directory as an auto top builder.

- Woman's wine, navy blue, and white herringbone check suit. The straight skirt has a side ziper closing with a 5" split on the opposite side. It has an faced waist with a facing of wine crepe. The long sleeved jacket has a long-fitted line with shoulders that are heavily padded, and a concealed hook and twist closing in front. The collarless neckline is trimmed with two rows of self-bias strips which extend to the front armholes. The edges of the sleeves have the same bias insets. The jacket is lined with wine crepe. Worn by donor. Label: "Custom made, Bess Schlank, Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles."

- This black and cerise wool plaid dress has a bodice of cerise crepe with a plain neck and short sleeves. The bodice is attached to a full skirt with wide box pleats. There is a stiff net nylon underskirt attached. It has a matching waist length jacket with three self-buttons down the front. The jacket sleeves are elbow-length. Label: "Scassi". - Woman's A-line dress is made of paper with a design depicting the telephone yellow pages. The collar has a bow at the center front, and the armholes are bound in black cloth tape. There are no fitting darts or fasteners. Worn by donor while pregnant with her first child, it was very comfortable. Label: Waste Basket Boutique, by Mars of Ashville, NC, Do Not Wash. This material is fire resistant unless washed or dry cleaned, then becomes dangerously flamable when dry.

- This woman's two-piece tan silk shantung dress has a skirt with a gathered side pannier. The dress is trimmed with brown faille, and the curaisse bodice has brown faille trim. It has brown panel in front with a large brown and tan bow, and streamers in back. Its sleeves are finished with a lace-edged white ruffle. The dress is lined. Note: Coat with hood 1950.001.011 matches the dress. See also matching parasol 1950.001.101. Note: Two pieces from trousseau of Della Miles Bertch, born c. 1870. Accession records spell donor's name 3 different ways, but US Census records always use Fredrika.

- Woman's dress in a fine red wool, trimmed with red velvet and white lace. The bodice, with a back closure, is draped and crosses in front like a loose jacket. It is edged with velvet that forms a rosette. A dicky of multi-colored beads with gold lace over red and turquoise. The oversleeves reach to the elbows, and wrist length undersleeves are of white lace. Cuffs of the beads similar to those on the dicky. The high waisted skirt flares slightly, and appears to open down the side, closes with rosettes.

- 1- Woman's four piece tobogganing outfit. Heavy cinnamon wool plush (mohair blend?). a) Jacket. Double-breasted (Russian blouse). High stand-up collar. Long tight sleeves with flaring cuffs. Mid-thigh length. Two pleated pockets with rounded corners on front, fastens with three blue covered buttons on shoulder. Wide self-belt, collar, cuffs and hem have embroidered blue sleds and large dots, lined with navy blue silk. b) Skirt. Boot top length, no waistband, gros grain inner band, A-line. Front placket closes at waist with hook-and-snaps, opens at hem with four covered buttons. Rounded patch pockets on each side of front, half belts go across back at waist & 3" below waist. Belts and pockets have blue covered button trim, not lined, but seams are bound. Has been shortened. c) Knickers. Not very full, knee length, black tape waistband. Side hook-and-eye fastening, legs gathered to narrow cuff which fastens with metal buckle. d) Hat. Same fabric. Mushroom shaped. Blue sleds embroidered on band. Blue silk tassle sewn on top. Separate piece comes down to cover ears. Lined with navy velvet. Label: J. Hock, Detroit. Donor said that not long after they were married (June 1916), she and her husband acted as chaperones for a winter sports trip to Lake Champlain, where she wore this ensemble.

- Woman's crepe-backed satin, below knee-length cocktail dress in olive green with loops of pink. A small sequin centers each of the loops. The bodice has short sleeves, a high round neck with a slight turn-over at the throat, and a slit down the center front that is fastened with a hook and loop. The back is draped, and has a cut out from the nape to shoulder blades. The natural waist has a waistband, and the skirt and bodice are gathered so as to appear to tie in the center front. The skirt is fairly straight and has a side zipper. Labels: "Hattie Carnegie" and "Stanley Korshak, Chicago."

The long narrow sleeves are decorated with a large triangular panel of drawn thread work. - This woman's one piece, blue silk taffeta dress has a pattern of tiny blue and white checks. The garment has a fitted bodice that buttons down front, and its buttons are covered by a panel of pleated blue iridescent taffeta. A band of embroidered iridescent blue taffeta, having a peacock-tail design, is edged with maroon around the back-neck, and over the shoulders. The front forms a V-shaped waist that separates toward the hips. The same material and pattern are around the cuffs of the long sleeves. The dress has a high neck with mandarin- like collar that is edged with tulle. The skirt front is of solidly pleated blue iridescent taffeta. It has a wide pleated drape of same material around the skirt at the hip line, and two ruffles at its bottom are under ruffles of maroon. Bows of blue taffeta, with blue fringed edges, are around the skirt's bottom. The back of the skirt is blue checked taffeta (same as bodice) that is gathered to form a bustle. There is a large bow of maroon grosgrain ribbon in back. The dress is entirely lined.

- Description:
- Woman's coat and dress evening ensemble of black and white floral print satin clocque. The floor length coat has a round neckline without a closing. The sleeves are pleated at the shoulder, then fall kimono-like to a three quarter length. The coat is seamed up the center back, and lined with acetate. The floor length dress has a fitted camisole bodice with spaghetti straps seed beads and dangling pendant beads. It zips down the back. The ensemble has a Ruth Joyce label.

- This re-embroidered cloque evening dress with stole has a silvery white ground with geometric padded areas outlined with silver thread. The sleeveless dress of just below knee length is princess-cut. It has a cowl neck in front continuing to a deep "V" in the back. There are pockets hidden in the front side seams. The snap closing in back is ornamented with a large self pompom. The dress is lined in white silk. The stole falls over the shoulder to hem length and the folds are tacked down to give it shape. "Ruth Joyce" is embroidered on the underside. Designed by Ruth Joyce.

- This two piece, dark purple taffeta woman's dress is trimmed with purple velvet. The bodice has a basque waist, and buttons down the front with thirteen cut white and smoke pearl buttons. It has velvet lapels, and a loose back shoulder yoke and tab across front opening just below lapels. Its velvet sleeves are trimmed with bands of taffeta, and have ruching at the cuffs. An additional row of pleated white silk ruching is also at the cuff. The back has a longer center peplum effect ending in a large flat bow. The bodice is lined with a tan cotton. The skirt's fabric matches that of the bodice. The skirt has an elaborately draped and gathered bustle. The skirt has a foundation of sheer wool fabric, possibly bombazine, that the trims are attached to. (The foundation is not a lining.) It has a long train, a dust ruffle of pleated white cotton edged with lace, and a brown cambric lining. Note: Probably belonged to Mrs. Charles Ducharme, grandmother of donor.

- Woman's evening gown having a white net bodice over pink slip. It has a high collar, elbow-length sleeves, panels of net with gilt-thread floral border over the shoulders, and rhinestone trim. Its skirt of pale pink daisy-brocaded satin has vertical chains of gilt-thread daisies. Its empire waist is straight, and slightly draped at the sides and back, and has a short train. It is enhanced with gilt buckles having beaded fringe hanging at front and side skirt drapes. Label: B.A. Krenz, Detroit. The dress belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs. James R. Hayes. Mr. Hayes was the proprietor of the Wayne Hotel from the 1880s to 1918. The dress was made by Bertha A. Krenz whose shop was on High Street (Vernor).

The skirt is cut on the bias, and is mid-calf in length. It has a peg-top, and a center zipper closing, with two darts front and back. A stiff self belt with buckle covered in mottled gray kid is lined with brown leather. The dress was worn by donor, a buyer for Hudson's, and was made by Irene of California.

The knee-length coat is double breasted, and is fairly straight with a seamed dropped waistline, and straight bracelet length sleeves. It has a small round collar, edged in white leather, and eight white leather buttons down the front with buttonholes that are bound in leather. The coat has a matching crepe lining. The dress is made of the same fabric with a close round neck, and short sleeves. The sheath dress has a seamed dropped waist in the front panel only, and has two white leather buttons just above. - Woman's navy blue wool matlesse suit with a cut-a-way jacket and long skirt. The V-neck jacket has a deep shawl collar and a partial velvet facing. Long narrow sleeves have three velvet ball buttons. The jacket closes with two velvet ball buttons and an elaborate velvet and self-fabric frogs. It is lined in nary color charmuse. The coat dips from waist length in front to knee length in back. Half-belt of fabric tubing and velvet at waist level. Ankle-length pegged skirt with a concealed waistband is shaped with pleats at front hem and tucks at waist. The skirt hooks down the side front, and is unlined with the seams bound with tape. It has a closing, and fullness at the right front with horizontal draping over the bust with a complex front snap closing. An underdress of tangerine chiffon over crepe has staying, and a concealed zipper. The gown is slit below the knee on the right side. Fullness on the right side flutters open to reveal the underdress. The dress was worn by the daughter of Norah Dingler to her Senior prom. She was a student at Shrine High School. - Woman's cream wool crepe, one piece dress. The garment has a V-neck of ecru net, long fitted sleeves, a waistline that is slightly above normal, and a pleated but narrow skirt. It also has an ecru lace collar, and a bodice pleat that extends from center front over the shoulder, and down the center back side. A cross over closure on the center front side is trimmed with a band of multicolored embroidery at thewaist is edged with pink grosgrain ribbon. A peplum of crepe and multicolored embroidery starts at the hip and extends around the back and ends at the other hip.

The top is collarless in front and has an 8" collar in back. The dress is fastened by several sets of hooks and eyes around the waist band. The ankle length skirt has a flying panel at the front attached to a yoke band, and the peplum is attached at the back. There is a 24" band around the waist which hooks under the flying panel in front.

There is a one button closing and a 1 1/2" wide self belt. The belt has a brass buckle. The jacket has patch pockets on either side. - This woman's black velvet and ermine cape is comprised of a straight tube of black velvet that is a below- knee-length. It is lined with white satin in a rice-paper pattern. The cape has armholes at shoulders, and a wide shawl collar of white ermine. It dips down in back to below waist length, and a band of ermine runs down the front to the hem. The collar is lined with black satin, and the velvet inner-lined with white wool. The cape is without fastenings though they may have been removed. Label: Pack-Wolin. Worn by donor in early 1930s about the time of her debut. Donor is daughter of Eleanor Ford Torrey, and granddaughter of Emory Low Ford.

The rest of the jacket hangs open. The long sleeves each have a matching band and black button at the cuff. The lining is black silk.. The skirt which has no waistband has a dropped waist, and the same yoke effect. The lower part of the knee-length skirt is cut on this bias. - Woman's two piece, deep taupe wool velour suit. The hip-length jacket is fitted, and has padded shoulders, and long straight, set-in sleeves. Two horizontal piped, slash pockets are at the waist level. A single wooden button is at the waist closing. Brown braid trim is applied over the shoulders. The collarless jacket is lined in brown crepe. The A-line skirt has a 2" waistband, with a side zipper. The unlined skirt is below knee length. The suit was made for the donor, who was a millinary buyer at Hudson's, by Adrian. It was a favorite of the donor's. Hat 84.122.46 was made to wear with the suit. Label: Adrian Original.

- This woman's, yellow silk crepe dress has a convertible collar, and a "V" throat that fastens with eleven small pearl buttons and self-fabric loops. The sleeves are fastened at the cuff with two small pearl buttons and self fabric loops. The cuffs are trimmed with a hand-embroidered design of abstract flowers, leaves, and scrolls in various colors of silk floss. A similiar decoration trims the front of the dress top around the neck opening, and at the center front. The skirt has fine accordion pleats, and the hip line is trimmed with smocking in different colors of silk floss. The dress does not have a label.

Fabric folded over hips to suggest panniers, and the skirt is pleated in the center back. Back zipper closure. The bodice is boned, and lined with black acetate. The gown's skirt has knee length black ninon underskirt-stiffened with a wide horsehair braid. Label: Julie Inc, Fisher Bldg. Detroit. Donor identifies it as a Norman Norell. It has been let out professionally at side and back seams. Donor also indicated that it had a train which was removed because she is not very tall.

- This woman's dress is of iridescent maroon taffeta. The three piece garment has a cut-away style bodice that is fitted, and reaches to the front waist. It has a long peplum on a separate belt, round shoulders, tight sleeves, and no collar. Black and red silk fringe runs down both sides of the bodice and across the back (simulating a collar) and around the edge of tail. The long full skirt has a train in back, and a cross hatch pattern around the bottom of the skirt that is made with black braid and beads. The black and red fringe that trims the bodice is also used around the hemline of the skirt.

- Woman's white silk charmuese dress with short chiffon sleeves. It has a V-neck that is edged with net, and an ecru lace yoke. The bodice is bloused with a second layer of material bloused to the waist, and heavily trimmed with gold and silver metallic thread, and strings of gold beads. The waist cummerbund lays over the top of a moderately full skirt. An overskirt pannier reaches to the hips, and is trimmed with the same metallic embroidery and gold beads as the bodice. The overskirt is slightly caught up in front by a sash (embroidered with bead fringe). The dress fastens in the back. Label: J. Hock, Detroit. This gown belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs. Hugo Scherer of Detroit.

- This is a woman's two piece wool twill suit in dark taupe wool with black silk braid. The jacket has long, straight sleeves, rounded collar, is hip length with a nipped-in waist. It is decorated with a swirling loop and paisley pattern of braid at the center front and jacket hemline. Covered buttons are at its center, and a hook and eye closure continue into the braid pattern at the front points of the jacket. The jacket is lined in crepe, and is labeled at the back of the neck B. Siegel. This unlined skirt is made of dark taupe wool twill. The A-line skirt is mid-calf length with 1 1/2 " waistband . There is a zipper and button closure at the side. It is labeled B. Siegel. The ensemble was purchased by the donor at Siegel's in 1949. It was donated to the B. Siegel Company for its 100th Anniversary celebration.

- This woman's suit has a black velvet jacket that has a collar, cuffs, and pocket flaps that are ecru wool with black and tan houndstooth check. The jacket has slits on its sides and in its back, and weights are on the side flaps. The jacket has an ecru satin lining. The skirt has a slight gored line in a wool fabric of ecru and black checks that match the collar and cuffs of the jacket. A black velvet underskirt hangs about 6" below the wool. Belonged to the donor: Marie Freud (Mrs. Joseph Siegel) who was born in Detroit in 1893, and married in Detroit in 1914. Label: B. Siegel Co.

It has an 11" hem, and attached petticoats of tan crepe and silk faced bottom interlined with horsehair. Back zipper and covered buttons with loop fastenings where chiffon begins. Worn by donor. - This is a woman's pantsuit evening ensemble. The cardigan jacket and shell are completely covered in sequins and beads to suggest the cables of traditonal knit tennis wear. The V-neck cardigan has a 1.25" wide decorative band of blue thread, green sequins, and red and white beads that extends around the neck and down the center front. The long sleeves have bead covered cuffs. The jacket has five gold buttons for its center front closure. It has a 2.75" wide beaded band at the hem, shoulder pads, and is completely lined in ecru silk. The jacket has a Bill Blass label. The collarless shell has the same colors and materials as jacket. It has a multicolored band around its neck. Its center back has an invisible zipper, and also has a beaded band around the armholes and the bottom hem. It is completely lined in ecru silk, and labeled Bill Blass. The slacks are white wool with two center front pleats, and straight legs with 1.5" cuff. The side opening has an invisible zipper, and hook-and-eye closures. The slacks have a white silk lining, and two loops for hanging. The slacks have a label that reads: Bill Blass; made in USA of Imported Fabric. This "tennis ensemble" is from the 1980 Bill Blass collection.

The long, full skirt has a separate pannier that is attached at the waist back in back. A pleated and gathered overskirt is attached in the front, and on the side. - This woman's eggshell satin wedding gown has an irregular length, with a scalloped hem that is lower in the back than in the front. It has long, straight sleeves that snap at their scalloped cuffs. The gown has a wide round neckline, and a dropped waist with scalloped piping. The gathered skirt is shirred with silk cord, and has a pearl bow positioned at its center front. A second pearl bow is also found at the left shoulder. The dress has a snap side closing. It was made at Pack-Wolin in Detroit, and worn by donor in 1926.

Bretelles over each shoulder are embroidered with pale pink chain stitches, gold flowers, lavender and blue grapes, and green leaves. The natural waistband is also trimmed with chain stitches, and an oval leaf crest. The A-line skirt is slightly longer in back with two crossed panels in the front that are embriodered with a pale pink abstract floral design at the hem. The back panel is plain. A short embroidered panel with two buttons is at the waist on the back left side. The dress hooks down the back. The gown belonged to the donor's mother, Mrs. James R. Hayes. Mr. Hayes was proprietor of the Wayne Hotel from the 1880s until 1918. The dress was made by Bertha A. Krenz whose shop was on High Street (Vernor).

The ankle-length skirt is beautifully cut with a hip yoke and two gores in back, and a T-shaped piece in front. The skirt has an invisible waistband, side hook, and left closure. The suit has a Henri Bendel, N.Y. label.
